Covid vaccine scandal: Slovakia rebels!

Following the investigation by the Slovak Court of Audit into the staggering sums spent on Covid vaccines, Prime Minister Robert Fico is calling for the Slovak judicial investigation to continue, which could lead to a request for a European investigation targeting von der Leyen[1].

In his speech to the Slovak Parliament on 25 April[2], Robert Fico unveiled an audit by the NKÚ, Slovakia’s equivalent of the Court of Audit, which questions the needless purchase in 2022 of 6 million doses for 151 million euros, 3.8 million of which have just expired in its stocks. The contractual provisions set before the change of government oblige Slovakia to pay for new doses until 2026. If it refuses delivery, 50% of their amount remains due. He therefore believes it is time for his country’s judicial authorities to investigate the contracts concluded between the European Commission and Pfizer. It should be noted that legal action in Liège is also seeking to obtain the details allegedly discussed by text message between Albert Bourla and Ursula von der Leyen[3]. The contractual provisions bind Slovakia until 2026, while millions of doses are perishing in its stocks.

Robert Fico, leader of the Slovak social democrats, had been ousted from power in 2018. He had already expressed his concerns about the negotiations surrounding an experimental vaccine as early as 2021, and about its administration to children under 12[4]. Since his return to power after the elections at the end of October 2023, he has been striving to free his country from the WHO’s grip on health. As soon as he took office in November, he declared that Slovakia would not sign the new pandemic treaty[5][6]. Now he is also trying to free himself from payments due to Pfizer until 2026: although the new government has not accepted any new doses since 2023, undelivered doses must be paid at 50%, which Slovakia stubbornly refuses.

The government looks for a loophole

Last January, MP Peter Kotlár was appointed by the Slovak government as commissioner responsible for reviewing processes and the management of resources during the covid pandemic. “The commissioner’s task will be to carry out coordination tasks aimed at assessing and analysing the legality, economy, expediency and effectiveness of the measures taken in the context of the covid‑19 pandemic in the years 2020 to 2022,” the government said in its statement. Stressing the lack of transparency and the exorbitant sums paid out to no avail, the Prime Minister believes it is time for his country’s judicial authorities to take up the matter. He also deplores 20,000 deaths following vaccination in his country.
